When the submersible pump situated in a property's water well no longer works, it usually doesn't take long for the owners to discover that the property no longer has water. The pump that moves the water into the property has to be replaced in order for the property to continue to receive running water. Although many people prefer to hire in an expert to do the job for them, it is possible to do as a DIY project. This article looks at how to fit a new submersible pump into a well.

Terminology

You will need to be familiar with certain words regarding the equipment used in this project. A tee-bar is a long pipe that connects to the pump and lowers it down the well pipe. It is T-shaped and the handle twists off once the pump is in place. A pitless adaptor is a mechanical device that is connected to the well and the pump is lowered down the well pipe and connected to this adaptor.

Get An Exact Replacement Pump

To make the project easier, it is important that you get an exact replacement for the old pump. This means that your new pump will give you the same water flow as the old one and can be installed without too much difficulty. Take good quality photographs of the old pump once you have pulled it up from the well. Make sure you capture the model number and the pump nameplate. The assistant at the plumbing outlet should be able to match the new pump to the one you have in the photographs.

Carefully Lower The Pump Into Place

Care needs to be taken when lowering the pump to avoid snagging the pump's pipes or wiring at the top of the casing. Continue to carefully lower the new pump until you feel that the pump is sitting on the pitless adaptor already in place. The most difficult part of the project comes next; you will have to thread the pump onto the pitless adaptor. Do this by turning the tee-bar and trying to get the threads coupled. It may take you a few attempts to do this. Once the pump has been properly threaded onto the adaptor, turn the handles of the tee-bar so that it comes off in your hands. Remove this from the well, leaving the new pump connected to the pitless adaptor. All that is left to do is feed the wiring up and through the well cap and ensure that the cap is properly fitted to the top of the casing.

You can now turn the power on and test the pump to ensure that it is working correctly.

If you feel you cannot do this, consider contacting a professional who knows how to work with water tank pumps to help you.
